No matter how long or how hard they strive, no matter how extensive their education as a species, no matter what they experience of the small heavens and larger hells they create for themselves, it seems that humans are destined to see their technological accomplishments always exceed their ability to understand themselves.
Why does humanity fear what it does not understand?
The fruitless effort to overcome the darkness of life, I hide in the shadows. Then I realized despite all of the emotions I am slowly regaining there is one I am without…
My abounded virtue-forgiveness. It’s been almost six years since I last dreamed of my former life back on Destiny Islands…the gentle hum of my mother’s voice, calm and loving. Friends that I once held dear on the sandy shores laying side-by-side laughing, the memories we shared together. And my first love, the one person I love the most for the rest of my life. Nothing was ever the same again after that night at the raft…
“Riku~!” Riku~! Wait for me!” Sand specks splashed from the ground at her running footsteps collecting damply on her shoes, Ashe ran blindly to the raft where Riku’s shadow waited. Her unruly short blonde hair swayed at the nape of her neck and her face held panic and alarm, she blinked tears from the corners of her beautiful blue eyes that had flecks of gray in them. “Where are you going?! Sora and Kairi are still asleep! And you promised me…that I…um we would, go together. You really aren’t going to leave without me, are you?” She whispered reaching out her hand for his shoulder but he withdrew from Ashe’s touch. Ashe gave him a look so sharp it might have let a bleeding wound. “Don’t glare at me like that, Ashe. I can’t wait any longer and I can’t risk you coming with me. You’re not ready for what lies ahead, for the other worlds that are out there. I know I promised you but this is something I have to do…by myself. I’m sorry, I-“
Riku broke off in shock at her tears sliding down her elegant face. “No! Don’t have to feed me anymore of your lies. I knew it…I just knew it. You’re just like everyone else!! For once in my life I actually trusted someone’s promise, you’re first person since my mother I thought I could depend on. But you broke it just as easily like the others. Riku, you dummy! You always knew I loved you-you knew I wanted to come with you. Don’t give me it’s for my safety, it’s for my own good crap…you could just had told me in the first place instead of giving up my hopes. And you said it yourself before with Sora and Kairi, if you do make it to other worlds there’s a chance you might never come home! What happens if you go and I never see you again?! You-mmmph…”
He caught her shoulder and spun her to face him touching his lips to hers before she could protest in a passionate kiss. Ashe stood there wide-eyed frozen to her place, he moved back staring at her emotionlessly his hands on her shoulders still. “I’ll come back, I promise. Ashe, wait for me. I’ll come back…” Before her mind could unravel itself to reply something happened…a mess of black clouds swirled angrily in the sky with streaks of lightning crashing down and a hole forming a tornado. It seemed bottomless, it’s demonic and unusual power pulled her-anyone came too close would have an uncontrollable longing to throw themselves in it, but why was that? It was so dark and welcoming-Riku swirled his back briefly to glare at the sky then back at Ashe. “You got to leave! Now! It’s dangerous here! Ashe, go!” He grabbed her wrist and ran up the shore then released her to return to the raft, she gasped and grabbed him frantically by the arm. “You can’t be serious thinking of going back there! Riku, don’t go! Don’t leave me!” She cried desperately although she knew it was pointless to argue with him when he made up his mind stubborn and determined as he is. “Ashe, trust me! I’ll come back for you. I promised you, didn’t I? Trust me…” He said gently hugging her for a moment and kissed the top of her head, Ashe held back her tears draping her arms around him tightly. “You better or I’m gonna hunt you down…Riku. I-I love you, don’t forget me. And you better come back for me. Okay?” She said with a weak smile, Ashe ran her fingers up her necklace and undid the knot. “Riku, I expect you to return this to me when you get back. This was my mother’s so…ya know.” Ashe flushed light crimson tying it on Riku’s neck then ran her way back home pausing halfway to glance back meeting his gaze. “You’ll come back to me, Riku…won’t you?” She sprinted behind a palm tree as dark figures started appearing from shadows, her body driven by panic and fear. “What the hell are those things?! Huh-Sora? What’s he doing out here so late? Ah, I gotta get out of here!” She thought out loud watching Sora run towards the raft and Riku; she made a run for the gates safely out of harm’s way. “Riku…”
He never came back…somehow deep down since that night I knew he wouldn’t but still…I had faith, I hoped he would. Riku, you dummy. I learned a lot because of your broken promise, I won’t be vulnerable and weak anymore. I gave up my emotions a year after your disappearance; I left home for another life…heh-who would have thought, me…a so-called bounty hunter. A real hard-ass killer now. Seems like a nightmare that I’ll never escape now…oh god, makes me wonder why did things turn out the way they did?
Ashe dropped to the ground as if every muscle in her body had turned to water lying in the grass exhausted. She held her bloodstained katar to her chest breathing heavily eyes flickering open at the sky that threatened to rain. Her fingers brushed against her chest where a serve gash bled and winced at the throbbing pain. “I hate this job…shit, where’s my katana? Oh no. Don’t tell me I left it in the corpse again-godamnit, I’ve been doing that too many times lately. I’ll just get another blade. Tired of saving that one. At least I got the money. Need to clean up this wound before…Nnngh, I hope no one finds me here like this.” Ashe growled then she was out cold, Ashe slept like a corpse, dreamlessly and deeply.
